Directions to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park has two principal visitor entrances:

  • Memorial Gate: Best for Hilltop Camp, Mtwazi Lodge and the northern Hluhluwe section.
  • Nyalazi Gate: Best for Mpila Camp, Masinda Lodge and the southern iMfolozi section.

Distances and travelling times are approximate and may vary according to traffic, roadworks and stops.

Durban to Memorial Gate

Approximate distance: 275 km
Travelling time: Approximately 3–3½ hours from central Durban

  1. Leave Durban and join the N2 north, travelling towards Stanger, Empangeni and Richards Bay.
  2. Remain on the N2 and continue past Richards Bay and Mtubatuba.
  3. Take the Hluhluwe/Sodwana Bay off-ramp.
  4. Follow the signs towards Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and Memorial Gate on the P453/R22.
  5. Continue for approximately 13 km until you reach Memorial Gate.

Durban to Nyalazi Gate

Approximate distance: 250 km
Travelling time: Approximately 3–3½ hours from central Durban

  1. Travel north from Durban on the N2, following signs towards Empangeni, Richards Bay and Mtubatuba.
  2. Continue past Richards Bay and take the R618 Mtubatuba/Nongoma turn-off.
  3. Turn onto the R618 towards Nongoma and Hlabisa.
  4. Continue west on the R618 for approximately 28 km.
  5. Look for the signposted entrance to Nyalazi Gate on your left.

The R618 passes through populated areas and has several speed humps, pedestrians and livestock. Allow additional travelling time and avoid driving this section after dark.

Johannesburg to Memorial Gate

Approximate distance: 600–650 km
Travelling time: Approximately 7–8 hours

  1. Leave Johannesburg on the N17 east, travelling towards Springs, Bethal and Ermelo.
  2. From Ermelo, follow the N2 towards Piet Retief and Pongola.
  3. Continue south on the N2 through Pongola towards Mkuze and Hluhluwe.
  4. Take the Hluhluwe/Sodwana Bay off-ramp.
  5. Follow the signs towards Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and Memorial Gate on the P453/R22.
  6. Continue for approximately 13 km to Memorial Gate.

Memorial Gate is normally the most convenient entrance when approaching from Johannesburg.

Johannesburg to Nyalazi Gate

Approximate distance: 630–680 km
Travelling time: Approximately 7½–8½ hours

  1. Travel east from Johannesburg on the N17 through Springs and Bethal to Ermelo.
  2. From Ermelo, follow the N2 through Piet Retief and Pongola.
  3. Continue south past Mkuze and Hluhluwe towards Mtubatuba.
  4. Take the R618 turn-off towards Nongoma and Hlabisa.
  5. Follow the R618 west for approximately 28 km.
  6. Turn left at the signposted entrance to Nyalazi Gate.

Important information

  • Enter “Memorial Gate, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park” or “Nyalazi Gate, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park” into your navigation system—not only the park’s name.
  • Do not allow navigation software to direct you through unofficial entrances or minor rural roads.
  • Fuel up before entering the park.
  • Visitors must reach their entrance gate before closing time; late entry is not permitted.
  • Gate times should be confirmed before travelling, particularly if arriving late in the afternoon.
  • Once inside the park, allow extra time to reach your camp because of the park speed limit and wildlife on the roads.

Mpila Camp is best accessed through Nyalazi Gate, approximately 30 km west of the N2.
Memorial Gate is accessed from the Hluhluwe/Sodwana Bay off-ramp and the P453/R22.
